Farrokh Maneckshaw runs his perfectly preserved in grace and space Laguna Anjuna in Goa's famed Anjuna area better known in the sixties for its hippie culture, and today for its flea market and beach parties.

Laguna Anjuna Goa guests in fact are those who had in their young days once lived in Goa during the hippie years, have now done well and whn visiting on holiday wanted a bit of luxury and tasteful living within the traditional style building. So when you label Laguna Anjuna Goa as a boutique hotel, he does not quite like the sound of it, but resigns to the branding rather dismally.

Like most true to spirit Goan Hotels, Laguna Anjuna Goa was once owned by a Goan family, the Nunes, who migrated to Bangalore. The Old Portuguese style house (now the main restaurant) had about 100 fruit and other trees that have been maintained, and also had many cows and buffaloes in the sheds.

Laguna Anguna Goa has the picturesque wooden bridge inside the property that aesthetically leads to the main structure.

Laguna Anjuna Goa cottages have been built around many fully grown trees creating little intimate courtyards, some private and some common.

Unconventionally built with thick laterite stone with pillars and domes externally, the roof is fully continuous, with wooden rafters and terracotta tiles curving and swooping to interconnect the various cottages. The interiors of the cottages have been designed by the famous Sonia and Thomas of Soto Decor. Wrought iron furniture, exquisite lamps and mirror frames adorn the suites.

Laguna Anjuna Goa free form pool is large, with granite boulders and scattered amidst the pool's peripheral are fragipani, banana and mango trees along with bamboo, grass and other vegetation, lending the area a lagoon like appearance. The pool floor is in blue and green hues of oxide, and has rocks and trees on its periphery. The pool and garden are what together make Laguna Anjuna Goa an appropriate name.

Sitting on the patio of the Laguna Anjuna Goa restaurant with its long verandah, one can watch families with children enjoying their dip in the pool. The verandah patio also provides for those who want to read a book or enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the ambience. In the restaurant a glass works and other charming touches like an old treasure chest that has come from Rajasthan but fits in perfectly with the old Portuguese Goan homes
